Visual Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem

Because it is so simple and visually obvious, this is my favorite proof of the Pythagorean Theorem: for any right triangle, the square of the hypoteneuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

    <rect x="10" y="10" width="210" height="210" fill="none" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="10,10 100,10 10,130" fill="gray" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="100,10 220,10 220,100" fill="gray" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="220,100 220,220 130,220" fill="gray" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="130,220 10,220 10,130" fill="gray" stroke="black" />
    <rect x="240" y="10" width="210" height="210" fill="none" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="240,10  330,10  240,130" fill="gray" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="240,130 330,10  330,130" fill="gray" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="330,130 450,130 450,220" fill="gray" stroke="black" />
    <polygon points="330,130 330,220 450,220" fill="gray" stroke="black" />

The large square on the left contains four congruent right triangles, leaving a white square in the middle having the area of the square of the hypoteneuse of the triangles. The large square on the right contains the same right triangles, leaving two white squares, each having the area of the square of one of the other two sides of the triangles.
